 Segment one questions

Q: When can my son/daughter enroll in segment one?
A: The minimum age as defined by State of Michigan is 14 years and 8 months.
 
 
Q: What does segment one consist of?
A:
Segment one is a three week class that consists of 24 hours in the classroom, and 6 hours behind of behind the wheel instruction with a certified instructor. In order to pass segment I, students have to earn a 70% or higher on the state written exam. 
 
 
Q: Once my son/daughter has passed segment one, how do they get their level one license?
A: The student needs to take the following:

  • Segment one (green) completion certificate
  • Their Social Security Card
  •  Proof of legal presence in the United States (birth certificate is the most common)
  •  Proof of Michigan residency
  • A parent or legal guardian over the age of 21 must be present

Segment two questions

Q: When is my son/daughter ready to enroll in a segment two class?

A: To be eligible to enroll in segment two, the student must have a minimum of 30 hours behind the wheel with a parent. Including a
minimum of 2 hours which are required to be at night. In addition to the behind the wheel hours, 90 days since the completion of
segment one must have occurred. A student most show their level one license and documentation of hours on the first day of the
segment two class.
 
 
Q: What does segment two consist of?
A:
Segment two is a three day class that consists of six hours in the classroom. In segment two there is no behind the wheel driving
with an instructor. Currently there is no test for segment two. However, the State of
Michiganhas one in the works for the future.
 
 
Q: What does my son/daughter do with his/her white certificate that they received after segment two?
A: The student needs to keep the white certificate until the road test. The road test examiner will ask the student to see it before the
road test is administered.  
 
                                                                           Road test questions
 
Q: When is my son/daughter ready to schedule a road test?
A: The student is ready to schedule a road test when they have completed all 50 hours behind the wheel, including 10 hours at night.
They must have been on their level one license for at least 180 days since the completion of segment one.
 
 
Q: What does my son/daughter need to bring to the road test?
A: They need to bring the following:

·        The level one license

·        Segment two white certificate

·        A parent or legal guardian over the age of 21

·        A vehicle in safe working order

o       Proof of valid insurance for the vehicle being used

o       Proof of registration for the vehicle being used

o       Valid license plate for the vehicle being used


Q: What does the road test consist of?

A: The road test consists of two parts. The first part tests basic vehicle maneuvers in the parking lot. The second part is an on the

Q: After my son/daughter passes their road test, what do we do next? How does my son/daughter recieve their level two

     license?

A: Take your son/daughter to the nearest Secretary of State, and bring the following:

   

  • Bring your level one license
  • The road test completion certificate
  • Segment two (white) completion certificate
  • Their Social Security Card
  •  Proof of legal presence in the United States (birth certificate is the most common)
  •  Proof of Michigan residency
  • A parent or legal guardian over the age of 21 must be present

                                                                       Level two/ level three questions
 
Q: Does a level two license carry full driving privileges?

A: No. A level two carries a driving restriction between the hours of midnight to 5 a.m. The only driving permitted between this
restriction period is if the driver is driving to and from employment, or with a parent/ guardian.
 
 

Q: So how does my son/daughter receive full driving privileges?

A: They must meet the following criteria

·        They must be at least 17 years of age

·        Minimum of six months on the level two license

·        At least 12 consecutive months of violation/crash free driving, while on the level 2 license.
        

If this criteria is met, they will receive full driving privileges with no restrictions. There is no need to go to the Secretary of State,
they will automatically mail the student a new level three license.
